Huescar

ImageThe small rural town of Huescar is known as "Cuidad de la Paz" (City of Peace). It sits at an altitude of 953 metres and has a population of less than 9000. Its ancient traditions and folklore are kept alive and the rural lifestyle is that of the authentic Andalusian village. The natural surroundings are picturesque with the stunning backdrop of snow capped mountain peaks in winter and greenery all year round.

Just outside the town there are two purpose built outdoor swimming pools, one is spring water fed into the pool from the mountain streams,  the other (opened in the summer 2008) is a purpose built and well facilitated family pool where all the family can enjoy a swim or simply relax in the sun.

Thursday in the village is market day, where the town bursts into life with a real traditional market full of exotic local produce. This is a very social occasion and is a great place to be even if you just sit back with a coffee or a glass of wine, you can soak up the atmosphere and culture whilst watching the world pass you by.

Rural does not have to mean boring! Those of you looking for a more adrenalin filled day out Paragliding, Hang Gliding, off-road quad/motor-biking, 4x4 tours, mountain biking or horse riding/trekking are just some of the things on offer around the area.

This is a land of beauty and contrasts where the mountain rocks are quite spectacular, with limestone formations sculpted by the elements and caves in the hillsides. There are many species of pine trees, as well as gall oaks and maples, which are not often found in Andalusia.

As for the fauna, there are wild boar, mountain goats, squirrels, rabbits, hares, foxes and mountain cats, amongst many other species. Eagles and vultures soar the skies, along with a host of other birds of prey and lots of smaller birds, including the much loved Robin. In short, this is a nature lover's paradise and is also extremely popular with photographers who can capture incredible scenes throughout the seasons. There are many beautiful walks in the area including (for the energetic adventurer) a 70 kilometre hike through the 'Ruta de Las Nieves' (very very beautiful), or walking within the Vidriera pine forest or taking to the Sagra Mountain tracks, the natural beauty here is endless. For those who prefer a gentler walk, there is also the Rodriguez Penalva Municipal Park in the Avenida de Granada among others or just wander around the town and marvel at some of the architecture of old, including the very beautiful ancient church.
